Production of the Jeep Cherokee (XJ) began in 1984.
Engine:
The first models marketed in Italy by Renault were equipped with a 2.1 TD Renault engine. Subsequently, with the transition to Chrysler-Jeep Italia, it was replaced with the 2.5 TD VM. In the USA, the standard engines are: the 2.5 AMC, the GM 2.8L V6 offered as an option until 1986. The 4.0L was introduced in 1987.

Transmission:
The AX-5 manual transmission and the Peugeot BA 10/5 were used on the 2.5 AMC and GM 2.8L V6 engines. The Peugeot BA 10/5 transmission was replaced in 1989 with the AX-15 used on the 4.0 I6 engines.

Transfer:
Model NP-207 (New Process) was used until 1987, then replaced by the NP-231 (or NV New Venture) model. Both were coupled to the Command-Trac 4x4 engagement system.
