When, in January 1986, American Motors announced the definitive retirement of the legendary Jeep CJ, its worthy successor was introduced: the Wrangler YJ.
Let's start by saying that the Jeep Wrangler drew on the experience gained with the Cherokee, particularly evident in its mechanicals.
It inherited many components from the latter, such as the steering system, brakes (ventilated discs at the front, drums at the rear), the five-speed transmission, the fully hydraulic clutch, the transfer case, the wheels, and the tires (215/75 R 15). From this, it's clear that from the old CJ, it has retained only the unmistakable style of Jeep-AMC products. Even the sturdy frame, with its double stringer and crossmembers, is now connected to the body by silent-blocs. The suspension features rigid axles and longitudinal leaf springs, but the movement is now "controlled" by two stabilizer bars and the engagement of front-wheel drive is controlled by a pneumatic system (Command-Trac). The engine that most characterized the early years of the Wrangler was a bulky six-cylinder oversquare (93 X 93) of 4229 cc. in-line used both on the Cherokee of the 70s and on the latest CJ 7 petrol models. Not particularly generous in terms of horsepower output, in fact the power is only 114 hp, delivered at a rather low revs (3800 rpm). While the smaller 2500 (the other engine available), with a simple single-point injection system, has 121 hp. From the second half of 1990 the 4.2 was replaced by the more performing 4.0 with 177 hp of which a High Output version with 190 hp was produced
