The new Jeep Wrangler was first introduced in the fall of 1996, but went on sale in 1997. The lineup includes three models: SE, Sport, and Sahara with a softtop. A hardtop is available for all models. Engine options include the 2.5-liter Power-Tech 4-cylinder engine with 120 hp (87 kW) and 186 Nm of torque for the SE model, and the 4.0-liter Power-Tech 6-cylinder engine with 185 hp (130 kW) and 290 Nm of torque for the Sport and Sahara models. All models feature the classic 5-speed AX-15 transmission, with an optional 3-speed automatic transmission. The Wrangler TJ's axles are equipped with a Dana 30 front and a Dana 35 rear, replaced by a D44 on Rubicon models. The new Quadra-Coil suspension, inherited from the Grand Cherokee, allows the Wrangler TJ to easily handle the most diverse situations encountered on challenging off-road terrain, without sacrificing ride comfort on normal roads. This suspension system features wishbones, front and rear traction bars, coil springs, a stabilizer bar, and low-pressure gas shock absorbers.
